I think my Nigel’s dad may be a Dan. It also seems I may have gone to high school with quite a large population of them. If this is in fact the case, it may indicate either that the species is also native to rural Michigan or that they have successfully infiltrated the ecosystem here (much like the zebra mussel and the Great Lakes).

It is also possible, if Nigel’s dad is in fact a Dan, that an effective strategy for releasing the Dan’s male offspring from his legacy of Danness is to make sure the male offspring are able to connect negative experiences–such as being screamed at and/or hit for very little reason or feeling unable to invite friends over for fear that they will see the Dan, laid off from work for using illegal drugs, spending his entire day using internet pornography–with the Dan’s behavior, and resolve never to emulate it themselves.
